Projection Mapping

In the last few years, projection mapping has gotten pretty popular, both in the art and commercial worlds. My first post featured artist Pablo Valbuena who was experimenting with intense light projected onto solid forms. He was working with similar attention to light theory as Dan Flavin was back in the 60's and 70's. Valbuena has now scaled up his work, and projects onto everything from parking garages to public buildings.

The internet is now full of advertisements meant to wow the masses through projection mapping. See this ad from Samsung that seems like a piece of modern art... until the end.

I've utilized projection mapping in my own installation work, though while artists like Valbuena are working abstractly, I've attempted to combine sculpture with storytelling. (albeit in somewhat abstract ways...) This piece is entitled "Stepping Off" and was installed at Umass Dartmouth for the month of April in 2011.

Installation work is notoriously difficult to document, but this video provides at least a record of the event.
